Executive functioning (EF) refers to the brain processes that help us plan, focus, and complete tasks toward achieving goals. Students with neurodivergent conditions, such as Autism and ADHD, may experience differences in EF that affect how they approach tasks. These differences are often mistakenly viewed as misbehaviour or a lack of effort. By understanding and recognizing these challenges, educators can provide more effective support. This handout defines key areas of EF, offers examples of common challenges, and suggests supportive strategies, knowing that each student’s needs may vary. Collaborate with your students to discover personalized solutions that work for them.
