When students struggle emotionally, what we see on the outside is often only part of the story. The Student’s Experience Tool helps educators and caregivers look beneath behaviour to better understand a student’s internal experience—especially for autistic students. The tool encourages us to organize difficult moments into three connected areas: autism-related stressors, emotional responses, and emotional effects.
Over time, these emotional stressors and experiences may result in increased social avoidance, behavioural challenges, personal distress, or reduced quality of life. When we focus only on behaviour, we risk missing the “why” behind it.
Supporting student mental health means shifting our lens—from asking “What’s wrong with this student?” to “What might this student be experiencing?” When we identify stressors and emotional impacts, we’re better positioned to respond with empathy, accommodations, and meaningful support.
