About the Course

Exploring Mental Health of Autistic Students
Not sure how to help autistic students with mental health difficulties?

Exploring Mental Health of Autistic Students is written by Dr. Jonathan Weiss, an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at York University (Toronto, Canada), and a Clinical Psychologist. Dr. Weiss also holds a York Research Chair in Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disability Mental Health.

You will be able to identify and define mental health and mental health problems in the context of autism and become familiar with the contributing factors that lead to the development of mental health difficulties in autistic children and youth.

By the end of this course, you will:

  • Become familiar with evidence-based supports and strategies to address mental health problems in autistic students.
  • Explore and apply supports and strategies in both the school or home environment.
  • Learn the core elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and the benefits of using CBT and mindfulness when supporting positive mental health.
  • Learn the fundamental importance of a holistic approach when supporting autistic youth, including the need for active collaboration between parents, educators and other mental health professionals.
  • Explore creative ways to evaluate and assess a student's behaviour guided by the tools and resources provided in this course.

This course will equip you to plan proactively, support and intervene to meet the needs of your autistic students and will also prepare you to adapt educational environments to set up autistic students for success.
